The Recorder of Deeds has many duties in regards to the preservation of records. All transactions having to do with land are recorded and permanently archived in this office.
St. Clair County has land records that date back to 1840. All land records have been microfilmed from 1840 through the present date.
Computerization has become an integral part of our daily operation. Our records are not on the internet, but are accessible by way of our public computer work station.
Records available on the computer at the present time include:
* Indexes with Images from January 1960 to the present
* Marriage License Indexes from January 1900 to the present
*Marriage Licenses with Images from July 1997 to the present
* Federal and State Tax Liens/Releases Indexes from August 2000 to the present
The Recorder's Office:
* Records surveys and plats of subdivisions.
* Records and files copies of Armed Forces discharge papers for all veterans who reside in the county. This is a free service.
* Files Federal and State Liens/Releases.
The Recorder's Office does not perform lien searches, title searches or land research.
Records available in the Recorder's Office include:
* Land patents (three indexed books)
* Marriage Records - 1855 to present
* Military Records (not public; notarized request form required).
* Naturalization Records
* Plats and Surveys
* Real Estate Records - 1840 to present
* Tax Liens - State and Federal
* Wills
* Birth and Death Records (housed in County Clerk's Office - 1883 - 1887)
* Court Records (Circuit, Municipal, and Probate with indexes in the Circuit Clerk's Office)
